The facial nerve (also known as the seventh cranial nerve) closes the eyelid. When the eyelid is unable to close, the eye is not protected from exposure and can dry out, leading to problems such as dry eye, ulcers and infection. Dr. Rowland can put a weight, either made of gold or platinum, in the eyelid to help the lid close. An incision is made at the natural lid crease and a pocket is made for the weight. The weight is then inserted, and the incision is closed with sutures. The sutures are typically removed in 1 to 2 weeks.
